GM to make Volt announcement, show off Cruze at L.A. auto show
General Motors Co. will announce a list of initial retail markets for the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car at next month's Los Angeles International Auto Show.
GM also said today it will display a U.S. production version of the Chevrolet Cruze sedan at the auto show, which is open to the media Dec. 2-3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The show is open to the public Dec. 4-13.
The Cruze, which launched in Europe and Asia earlier this year, will get up to 40 miles per gallon when it debuts in North America next year. GM last month said it was delaying the launch about three months until the third quarter of 2010 to ensure a flawless launch.
The Volt, meanwhile, is scheduled to go on sale late next year and will let commuters travel up to 40 miles on electric power. The engine kicks in after its battery is drained by about 70 percent to sustain the battery's remaining charge to keep the car running for several hundred miles.
GM currently has more than 80 Chevrolet Volt pre-production vehicles on the road undergoing testing.
